Defending champs off to winning starts

Centro Escolar University and San Beda College Alabang kicked off their senior title-retentions bids with convincing wins during the opening weekend (Sept. 1-2) of the 49th WNCAA at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

CEU, eyeing an eighth straight basketball title, walloped Philippine Women's University, 64-42, with Jenina Ann Solis firing a game-high 14 points.

The Lady Scorpions limited the Patriots to just nine points each in the first and fourth periods.

Two-time titlist San Beda likewise opened its season with a win in the volleyball event, dealing University of Asia & the Pacific a 25-16, 25-19, 25-7 beating.

San Beda actually scored a double as it also prevailed in its opening senior basketball match, 61-52, over University of Makati. Zoey delos Reyes paced the Red Lions with 12 points.
